Atrium Health Navicent pediatrician shares Halloween safety tips for parents

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — With Halloween approaching, a pediatrician at Atrium Health Navicent is sharing tips to help keep children safe while trick-or-treating.
Dr. Christy Peterson joined 41 Today to discuss costume safety, visibility and checking Halloween candy.
Peterson recommends brightly colored costumes, flashlights and glow-in-the-dark accessories to help drivers see children. She also encourages parents to choose comfortable shoes and remind children to use crosswalks and look both ways before crossing streets.
When it comes to candy, Peterson says a responsible adult should inspect each piece for signs of tampering before children eat it. She also recommends avoiding homemade treats from people families do not know.
Peterson reminds parents of children with asthma to follow their prescribed treatment plans before heading out.
Drivers should also be extra cautious in neighborhoods, especially between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m., when children may be trick-or-treating.
Halloween is Saturday, October 31.
