Pedestrian killed crossing Mercer University Drive
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man was hit and killed by a car on Mercer University Drive near Daffodil Street Wednesday morning.
Theodore Reese, 74, was pulling a dumpster filled with cans across the street when he was hit just after 7 a.m. 41NBC spoke to residents who lived close to the scene of the accident, they said Reese regularly crossed the road with a dumpster full of cans for recycling.
Attempts to revive Reese were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead shortly after being hit. Deputy Clay Williams with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said Reese was wearing dark clothes while he crossed the street before sunset.
“It is hard to see a pedestrian when you’re in a moving vehicle, the speed limit through here is 45 so you have to figure it takes a little while to stop especially when it’s dark,” Deputy Williams said. “Because if you’re wearing dark clothing it is hard to see.”
No charges have been filed. Coroner Leon Jones called the incident an accident.
