Peach Co. football team to wear helmet stickers in honor of Pike Co. teen’s death

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Peach County High School Trojans are playing the rest of this season in remembrance of Pike County football player, Dylan Thomas, according to Head Football Coach Chad Campbell.

Thomas is the teen who died from a brain injury sustained during this weekend’s game against Peach County.

“We know what they’re going through,” Campbell told 41NBC.

It’s a feeling he says he knows all too well after losing one of his own players a few years back.

“You hate to see anything happen to a young kid, female, male it doesn’t matter,” he explained.

Campbell remembered the day two years ago when he got the news that one of his own players–Raekwon Smith–was killed in a car accident.

“We went through a similar circumstance a couple years ago and we had a lot of support from surrounding communities,” he said.

Now he and his team want to pay it forward and give Pike County that same support for the loss of Dylan Thomas.

“I had other people reach out to me that were very helpful to me and the team what we were going through so I didn’t forget that,” he said.

Campbell says his players will wear stickers on their helmets for the remainder of the season in honor of Dylan.

“We’re going to play for Dylan this season. I told Coach Webber anything that we can do or I can do to help with the situation, I’d be glad to,” Campbell continued.

As Peach County High School continues collecting donations on behalf of Dylan’s family.

“We’ve got some things that we’re working on and some monetary things and some other things that we’ve talked about doing. We just want to help the family out however is needed and let them know that we’re there for them and thinking about them,” the coach said.

Campbell and his team are trying to turn competition into comradery by letting the Pike County community know they’re on the same team.

“It’s more than about football. It’s about teaching life lessons and making kids well rounded,” he added.

Campbell says a few of his players will be attending Dylan’s funeral. If you’re interested in helping, you can donate to Dylan’s family by stopping into the front office at Peach County High School and dropping donations off there.
