Old Clinton BBQ House Drops by with a Sweet Treat

Old Clinton BBQ House in Gray still has books that date back to 1961 on the day it opened.

Owner, Bobby Michaud says “We didn’t actually broaden the menu until ’91 or ’93 where we took on chicken by the half, the pork ribs, and then we started selling smoked turkey.”

Before that, they were known for chopped pork in a sandwich or on a plate. Customers like Mike Ousley come in just for the sandwich. He says, “Everything is good, but I like the sandwich.”

Gerri Smith travels more than 30 miles twice a week just to get a few of her favorite items for lunch. “The BBQ sandwich and the ribs, and I like the pork skins,” says Smith.

However, pork isn’t all they’re known for. Michaud says the multi-layered chocolate cakes are pretty popular too. “People will actually come here just for those,” says Michaud.

One cake calls for three cups of granulated sugar, a half cup of cocoa, half a pound of butter, one can of evaporated milk, and one tablespoon of vanilla. Restaurant manager Angie Michaud explains between the icing and the cake there is one pound of butter.

Bobby Michaud laughs as he says, “There’s a lot of stuff in there that we shouldn’t eat.”

It is a complete indulgence that makes for a mouth watering treat.

Old Clinton BBQ House Chocolate Icing Recipe

3 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 lb butter
1 can evaporated milk
1 tablespoon vanilla

Boil all ingredients together for 1 minute; let thicken and cool before icing cake
Makes one 12 layer cake
