New Community Center coming to Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A community has a new place to meet.

The Neighborhood Association teamed up with the county to host a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the Kings Park Community Center.

The New Center will have a computer lab, activity area, and a kitchen.

Sam Hart, former Chairman of the Bibb County Commissioner Board, helped create the first center and said the new center will encourage people to move to Kings Park.

“It was a community of pride and a lot of the persons who still live here know about that pride, ” Hart said. “This community saw that when folks died out and moved, it lost a little bit of its luster and it’s time for it to get its swagger back.”

Commissioner Elaine Lucas said the center is being rebuilt due to request from community members.

“They needed a place to meet. They were meeting in some very small houses that were not joined together, so we came up with the idea to building a new community center for them to kind of liven the neighborhood,” Lucas said.

She said the center will honor Sam Hart and the Neighborhood Association’s contribution to the new center.

“On the inside we are going to recognize the contributions of Sam Hart, in setting up the first community center, and we are also going to recognize the neighborhood association with a suitable plaque,” Lucas said.

The Kings Park Community Center is funded by the Blight Remediation Program.

Lucas said the center is expected to be finished in the next seven to nine months.
