New $50 million development coming to downtown Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A major new development is coming to downtown Macon.

“We’re so excited about what we see going on that we wanted to be part of it,” Tim Thornton with Thornton Realty Company said.

MMI Capital, LLC and Thornton Realty Company announced the more than $50 million mixed use development plan Thursday. It  takes up almost the full block between 1st and 2nd Streets and Poplar and Plum Streets.

It will include a hotel, apartments, condos, retail space, a restaurant, and a parking deck. The developers say it will connect downtown to the hospital.

“This is going to bridge that gap and really widen out what we think of as downtown Macon,” Heath Miller with MMI Capital said.

Mayor Robert Reichert tells 41NBC the idea fits perfectly with the city’s revitalization plans.

“This is an essential development to the continuation of the progress toward a walkable, urban environment and prosperity in downtown Macon,” Reichert said.

Thornton says the project will create hundreds of jobs.

“Between the hotel, the restaurants, the shops, the spa that is proposed to come in,” Thornton said.

It is estimated to have a $200 million economic impact. The duo is working with the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority to get a final piece: a parking lot.

“In general they approve, but we have to work with the attorneys to get the exact language worked out in the the project stutters,” Heath said. “They want to make sure not [to] sell it to somebody who says they’re going to do something but nothing happens and we’re fully in support of that.”

Heath adds the new development will bring more people to the area.

“I think it’s going to open up to a different set of people and make overall downtown more desirable,” Heath said.

The parking structure is scheduled to break ground in early 2016 and the rest of the projects will follow shortly after.
