Nemechek, Pollard win at SpeedFest 2016
Thousands showed up at Cordele’s Watermelon Capital Speedway for SpeedFest 2016.
Cordele, GEORGIA (41NBC/WMGT) – A partly cloudy sky and temperatures in the 70s greeted thousands of race fans Sunday at SpeedFest, a two-race late model event at Watermelon Capital Speedway that features some of racing’s biggest and up-and-coming names.
Defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch was among those in the Super Late Model 200-lapper. It was Busch’s first on-track action since offseason leg and foot surgery.
John Hunter Nemechek, a current driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, took the checkered flag in the Pro Late Model 125-lap race, edging out Chris Dilbeck for his third straight SpeedFest Pro Late Model win. Casey Roderick finished third. Bret Holmes and Steve Dorer rounded out the top five.
Well-known short track racer Bubba Pollard won the Super Late Model race, holding off Harrison Burton, who raced his way into the day’s main event with a second place finish in the last-chance race.
Zane Smith finished third, Noah Gragson was fourth and Cole Anderson was fifth.
Busch was involved in an accident and wound up 24th. Nemechek finished 14th after being spun while leading late in the race.
