Monroe County school bus evacuated over grenade-shaped cologne bottle

Deputies found no weapon or explosive device. Students continued their route after the bus was searched and declared safe.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Monroe County school bus was evacuated Thursday afternoon after someone reported a student had what appeared to be a hand grenade, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says it received the report around 3:28 p.m. The bus stopped on Highway 42 at Logwall Baptist Church and students evacuated.

According to the sheriff’s office, a bomb-detection dog checked the bus for explosives before deputies searched it.

Deputies found a cologne bottle resembling a hand grenade inside a student’s bag. No weapon or explosive device was found.

The bottle was confiscated and turned over to school officials. The sheriff’s office says the students and bus continued their route after the scene was declared safe.

Monroe County Schools says Mary Persons administrators contacted the sheriff’s office after receiving the report.
