MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Middle Georgia Community Food Bank received about 40,000 pounds of donated food Thursday to help families facing food insecurity across the region.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the food bank welcomed a fully loaded truck.

Whitney Palmer, who presides over the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says serving others is important to the church.

“I think we strive to do what the Savor Jesus Christ did in ministering to and providing food to those with food insecurities,” she said. “So this allows us to help those in need, just like He would.”

President and CEO of the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank Kathy McCollum says this will help many families who struggle due to the cost of food.

“It’s estimated that 1 in 6 of our Middle Georgia neighbors face food insecurities,” she said. “So, we know that there are people out there who really need that food assistance from grocery prices and other needs that have become increasingly expensive. There are a lot of families out here who are struggling to take care of their basic needs, and we’re happy to be able to offer food assistance through over 200 of our partner agencies across 24 counties.”

Palmer says this event is all in the name of Jesus.

“I know how much I’ve been given, and I know that it’s a great opportunity to help those who are less fortunate,” she said. “And it allows me to follow the example of Jesus Christ.”
