Mercer’s Morgan Pittman named SoCon Pitcher of the Month
Pittman continued his reign as one of the Southern Conference’s top relievers, posting a 1.40 ERA to help the Bears to a 5-1 mark in April when he made an appearance. He finished the month with just three earned runs in 19.1 innings of action, while striking out 21 batters and limiting opponents to .183 hitting during that span.
The senior left-hander was at his best in the Bears’ series-opening win over Western Carolina, fanning 11 in 5.2 innings of work to help Mercer erase an early four-run deficit. Pittman also had extended inning appearances in series-opening victories over UNCG and Wofford.
The Newnan, Ga. native tops the SoCon with a 2.45 ERA this season, while also ranking among the league leaders in opposing batting average (.232), pitching appearances (23) and strikeouts per nine innings (8.59).
The conference monthly honor is the second for the Bears this season, as Kyle Lewis took home Player of the Month accolades in March after exploding for a .386 batting average, 21 runs scored, seven home runs and 18 RBIs in the month.
Mercer heads into its bye week in the conference schedule and will be off until next Tuesday, when it takes on Alabama at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Ala. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m. EST.
