Mercer’s Lewis in College Home Run Derby July 2

OMAHA, Neb. (MERCER ATHLETICS) – Mercer University sophomore Kyle Lewis earned an invitation to participate in the sixth annual TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby on July 2. The event will be shown live from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on ESPN at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Lewis burst onto the scene in his first campaign as a full-time starter, establishing himself as top power hitters in college baseball. The 2015 Southern Conference Player of the Year led the league and ranked seventh nationally with 17 home runs this season. He also led the conference with a .367 batting average and ranked fifth in the SoCon with 56 RBIs to fall just shy of the league’s triple crown.

The Snellville, Ga., product earned Louisville Slugger and NCBWA Second Team All-America honors in 2015, becoming the fourth Bear in the last four years garner All-America accolades. A national finalist for the Gregg Olson Award, Lewis also led the SoCon in slugging percentage and total bases, while posting 28 multiple-hit performances and 15 multiple-RBI efforts this season.

Despite leading the nation in home runs over the past five years with 312 long balls,  Lewis’ appearance will mark the first time that a Mercer player has participated in the event.

The 2015 Home Run Derby field also includes 2014 runner-up, Eric Guiterrez of Texas Tech, as well as Wake Forest’s Will Craig, North Dakota’s Jeff Campbell, Miami’s Zack Collins, Georgia Tech’s Kel Johnson, North Carolina State’s Joe Dunand and BYU’s Colton Shaver.

Individual tickets for the 2015 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby & Omaha World-Herald Fireworks are $8 for children (ages 3-12), $12 for adults, or a ‘Family Four-Pack’ for $36.
