Mercer’s Kyle Lewis named SoCon Player of the Month
Lewis led the Bears to a league best 5-1 mark in SoCon play during the month, batting a team-best .386 with 21 runs scored, seven home runs and 18 RBIs during that stretch. He had a hit in 17 of his 19 contests in March, while closing out the month on a 12-game hitting streak.
The sophomore outfielder’s seven home runs in the month matched or exceeded the season output of any other player in the Southern Conference to that date, as he ranks among the nation’s leaders with 10 long balls on the season.
Lewis was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week after hitting .562 with seven runs, four extra-base hits and six RBIs in a week that was highlighted by a sweep of ETSU in the Bears’ SoCon debut. The Snellville, Ga. native scored the game-winning run in the series-opening victory over the Buccaneers, before hitting a walk-off home run to complete the sweep on Sunday. Lewis also led Mercer to a sweep of No. 21 Georgia in March, hitting 4-for-8 with five RBIs, four runs scored and two extra-base hits.
The Snellville, Ga. native tops the SoCon in home runs (10) and total bases (92) this season, while also ranking among the league leaders in hits (50) and doubles (12), batting average (.382), slugging percentage (.702), runs scored (31) and RBIs (26).
Mercer takes on Georgia Tech tonight in Atlanta, as the two teams square off at Russ Chandler Stadium with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
