Mercer’s Kourtis named A-Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Thanks to a pair of dominant outings on the mound, junior Dimitri Kourtis was honored by being named the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon.

The weekly conference award is the first of Kourtis’ career and pulls Mercer into a tie with Florida Gulf Coast for the most A-Sun weekly honors this season, with three.

Kourtis helped Mercer to a 3-1 week overall including an impressive 4-1 mid-week win at No. 23 Georgia Tech and a weekend series victory over North Florida.

The Alpharetta, Ga. native started his week by throwing four innings of hitless relief while striking out four batters to earn the save in Mercer’s 4-1 win at No. 23 Georgia Tech on March 25. Kourtis followed that outing up with 3.1 innings of work during which he only allowed one earned run to pick up his first win of the season in an 11-4 triumph over North Florida on March 30.

Kourtis has finally recovered from a shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for the first month of the season. Kourtis led the A-Sun Conference with nine saves last season and was one of only 50 relief pitchers in the country named to the initial watch list for the 10th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award prior to the start of the 2014 campaign.

Mercer is back in action on April 1 when it travels to Montgomery to take on Alabama State at 7 pm at the ASU Baseball Complex.
