Mercer women’s basketball team helps out at summer camp

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer women’s basketball coach Susie Gardner is normally coaching college women, but this week, it’s all about the kids.
Girls from all over middle Georgia are learning how to dribble, pass and shoot at day-long sessions at Hawkins Arena.  Gardner acknowledges there are all kinds of camps going on in the summer but says her camp is different from the others.

“The great part about our camp is our players actually get to work with them,” Gardner says.  “That allows these kids to kind of relate to them.  They get to know them by name, and then they come and watch them during the season.  Our kids have done a great job working as counselors.”

Gardner says not all the girls at the camp will go on to have basketball careers, but it’s important they just have fun.

The camp wraps up at the end of the week.  The boys’ camps, led by men’s basketball coach Bob Hoffman, start next week.
