Mercer to debut Macon Made badge for 2014 opener

MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Mercer University football team will debut a Macon Made badge on the team’s helmets and carry a Macon Made signature flag when the team steps on the field for the 2014 season opener against Reinhardt on Thursday, August 28.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our pride in the city of Macon,” said Mercer Director of Athletics Jim Cole. “Our ties with this city run deep and we cherish being Macon’s “hometown” team. Having a Thursday night opener is unique and creates a marquee event for our local fans.”

Mercer is also offering fans the opportunity to join the celebration and create a special Macon Made atmosphere for the opening game. The first 1,000 fans to enter the stadium will receive a special edition Macon Made Mercer Bears t-shirt.

“We have always said that we are first and foremost Macon’s team,” Mercer head football coach Bobby Lamb said. “This city has rallied around our program and we are proud to let everyone know that we are representing Macon, Georgia.”

In late June, the College Hill Alliance revealed the Macon Made badge and made it available for Macon-based businesses, industry and organizations to induce civic pride and promote local products. The Bears’ Macon Made badge has been customized to include a Mercer University logo and the institution’s founding date of 1833.

Other local entities to adopt the Macon Made badge include the Macon Beer Company, Aspen Products and the Cherry Blossom Festival.
