Mercer softball wins Mercer Invitational

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Mercer softball team used a huge fourth inning Sunday to beat Jacksonville State 13-6 in the championship game of the Mercer Invitational.

The Bears led 4-0 in the second inning before a five-run frame by JSU gave the Gamecocks the 5-4 edge. Trailing 6-4 in the top of the fourth, Mercer took its second lead of the day after Natalie Shiver’s three-run home run. The Bears added four more runs in the frame to take an 11-6 lead.

Emma Andrew’s RBI single in the fifth and a run off a JSU throwing error in the seventh capped the day’s scoring.

Mercer’s Riley Carter, who was named tournament MVP, allowed just two hits through five innings.

The Bears finished the tournament 4-1 with wins over Valparaiso (twice), IPFW and Jacksonville State. Their only loss came to Jacksonville State Saturday.

The team visits Auburn, Alabama next to play in the Auburn Tiger Invitational. Their first game is Thursday against Auburn at 4.
