Mercer offense comes alive in 13-8 win over Alabama State
Mercer (27-7) has now won seven games in a row, its second-longest winning streak of the season, while its 27 wins is tied for the third-most in the country.
Every Bears starting position player had at least one hit in the win, while seven players recorded multi-hit performances. Senior Michael Massi had the biggest night of all, setting a new career-high in hits by going 4-for-5 in the contest with two RBI and three runs scored.
With the score tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the second inning, the Mercer bats started to get going against Alabama State starter Michael Estevez. An RBI double by junior Nate Moorhouse, an RBI single by freshman Matt Meeder and a two-run home run by Massi pushed the Bears out to a 5-1 lead.
The Hornets hung around, however, plating three runs in the top of the third keyed by a two-RBI single by Emmanuel Marrero to make the score 5-4.
Mercer started to pull away from that point forward, scoring seven runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach. A two-RBI single by Meeder in the third and an RBI single by Workman in the fourth led the surge that saw the Bears in front by a score of 12-5 through four innings of play.
Senior Stephen Glaze did the rest, pitching 4.1 innings of relief to earn his team-high sixth win of the season.
Junior Chesny Young finished 3-for-5 with a run scored to extend his team-high hitting streak up to 14 games in the win.
Mercer is back in action tomorrow evening when it travels up to Atlanta to take on Georgia State for a 6 p.m. first pitch at the GSU Baseball Complex.
