Mercer beats Furman 27-20 in overtime

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (41NBC/WMGT) – A week after picking up its first Southern Conference win of the season, Mercer added another by beating Furman 27-20 in overtime.

Mercer (5-5, 2-4 SoCon) led 13-0 at halftime and added another score in the third quarter before the Paladins responded with 20 unanswered points. Furman (4-6, 2-4 SoCon) had a chance to take the lead with an extra point in the final minute of regulation but missed. That left the game tied at 20.

Alex Lakes scored from two yards out on the Bears’ first possession in overtime to give his team a 27-20 lead. On the first play of Furman’s possession, Zach Jackson intercepted P.J. Blazejowski’s pass to seal the Bears’ second straight win.

Lakes finished with 141 rushing yards for Mercer, which wraps up its season with a home game Saturday against Samford. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.
