Mercer baseball sweeps SoCon Player of the Month honors

MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS) – After leading the Mercer University baseball team to a 9-1 record against Southern Conference opponents in the month of May and the program’s first SoCon regular-season and tournament titles, sophomore Charlie Madden and senior Eric Nyquist were named the SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Month.

The sweep of the SoCon monthly honors gives Mercer a league-best four on the season, as Kyle Lewis was named the Player of the Month in March while Morgan Pittman took home Pitcher of the Month accolades in April.

Madden caught fire in May, hitting .408 with three home runs and a team-leading 21 RBIs to lead Mercer to the SoCon regular-season and tournament titles and the program’s third NCAA Regional appearance. The sophomore was even better in postseason play, tallying a .522 average on his way to all-tournament honors in both the SoCon Championship and the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. The surge helped Madden raise his batting average by 40 points in the final two weeks, as he finished the year with a .272 average, nine home runs and 49 RBIs.

Nyquist was the league’s most dominant pitcher in the month of May, posting a 4-0 record with a 1.93 ERA with wins in four of his six starts. He was at his best during the SoCon Baseball Championship presented by Mountain Shore Properties, limiting opponents to one earned run in 14 innings of work. The Alpharetta, Ga. native closed the championship with a complete-game shutout of second-seeded Samford, holding the Bulldogs’ high-powered offense to six hits en route to Walt Nadzak Most Outstanding Player honors. He closed his career with 15 consecutive scoreless innings, while finishing the 2015 season with a 9-2 overall record and a 3.11 ERA.

Mercer reached the 35-win mark for the sixth straight season, as it entered NCAA Regional play as one of only nine programs in the nation to achieve the feat.
