Mercer baseball advances with 3-2 win over The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. (MERCER ATHLETICS) – The Mercer University baseball team pulled out a 3-2 victory over The Citadel in the opening round of the Southern Conference Championship presented by Mountain Shore Properties.

“This was a huge win for us,” said head coach Craig Gibson. “It is always important to get a win in the opening game and settle in. We got some great support from our starting pitcher and then Pittman and Kourtis were both fantastic down the stretch. It wasn’t a great offense performance this morning, but we were good enough when it counted.”

After surrendering a run in each of the first two innings, the Bears pitching staff settled in with seven straight scoreless frames to close out the game. Eric Nyquist threw five strong innings to start the game for Mercer, allowing just two runs, one earned, on three hits to match a career-high with 8 victories this season.

Morgan Pittman struck out five batters to work out of multiple jams, stranding nine runners in 3.1 scoreless frames. Dimitri Kourtis closed out the game for his third save of the year, striking out the final two batters of the game to send the Bears to their first SoCon Championship victory in program history.

Mercer (32-21) was held to six hits in the contest, after coming into the game with double-figure hits in nine of its last 11 games. Trey Truitt led the way for the Bears’ offense, recording his 13th multiple-hit performance of the year with a pair of singles.

The Citadel (26-29) grabbed an early 1-0 lead, as Connor Walsh lifted a two-out solo shot over the fence in left center. The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the second, taking advantage of an error to grab a 2-0 advantage. However, Mercer’s pitching staff kept The Citadel off the scoreboard the rest of the way to key the comeback.

The Bears’ offense took advantage of the opportunity, breaking through in the bottom of the third. Mercer loaded the bases for sophomore Charlie Madden, who came through with a decisive two-out double to right field to plate three runs and hand the team a 3-2 lead.

Mercer will take on the winner of today’s UNCG/VMI game tomorrow, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. Visit MercerBears.com for more details on the contest, including links for live video and statistics.
