Teen drowns at Amerson Water Works Park
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon teenager drowned Sunday at Amerson Water Works Park.
A release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were told 17-year-old Marcos Mendez was in the Ocmulgee River near one of the park’s picnic areas when he slipped off a float and went underwater. Mendez was at the park with family and friends.
When deputies arrived, an off-duty deputy who was working at the park, some employees with the park and others had already gone into the water to search for Mendez. Macon-Bibb firefighters, Department of Natural Resources rangers and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter also responded.
Divers with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department Dive Team found Mendez’s body just before 8:30 p.m.
