Major distribution center coming to south Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new major distribution center is coming to Macon-Bibb County.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission approved conditional use for “project unicorn” on Monday. The 1 million square feet building will be located near Sardis Church Road and Skipper Road in south Macon.

People living in the neighborhood attended the meeting addressing concerns. Several are for the new center but have other problems associated with the traffic it will bring.

Executive Director of Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission Jim Thomas says, “I think that the developer has tried to do his best to ameliorate those problems and minimize them the best he could and the commission agreed that he had so they approved the site as it was submitted.”

Other industrial buildings are located near the site including Tractor Supply Co., Tyson and Fed Ex. The center will hire about 600 people and will operate 24 hours a day.

The name of the company has not been released yet. Company names aren’t announced until the deal is finalized.
