Macon ranks among Georgia’s most expensive markets for gasoline

Macon is among Georgia’s three most expensive metro markets, while Warner Robins remains below the statewide average.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Gas prices in Macon have reached $4.12 per gallon, placing the area among Georgia’s three most expensive metro markets as drivers across the state continue paying more at the pump.

Georgia’s average price for regular unleaded gasoline stands at $4.09 per gallon, according to AAA. That is 8 cents higher than last week, 27 cents higher than last month and $1.18 higher than one year ago.

The statewide average remains 40 cents below Georgia’s record of $4.49 per gallon, set in June 2022.

At the current state average, filling a 15-gallon tank costs approximately $61.35.

“Georgia drivers are continuing to feel the strain of higher fuel costs, with pump prices holding above $4 a gallon, taking a significant bite out of household budgets,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman for AAA- The Auto Club Group, in a news release. “Until market conditions improve, drivers should expect ongoing volatility and look for ways to stretch their fuel dollars, such as combining errands, reducing unnecessary trips, and using fuel-saving driving habits.”

Macon among Georgia’s most expensive gas markets

Macon’s average of $4.12 per gallon trails only Savannah at $4.17 and Augusta-Aiken at $4.13 among Georgia’s most expensive metro markets.

Warner Robins is among the state’s least expensive metro markets at $4.03 per gallon. Athens stands at $4.05, while Valdosta has the lowest listed metro average at $4.01.

Atlanta’s average is $4.07 per gallon.

National average reaches $4.47

The national average increased 16 cents over the past week to $4.47 per gallon. That is more than $1 higher than the national average one year ago.

AAA said crude oil prices averaging around $100 per barrel continue to push fuel costs higher.

The national average is approaching this year’s high of $4.56 per gallon, reached May 21. The national record is $5.01 per gallon, set June 14, 2022.

Fuel-saving recommendations

AAA recommends that drivers compare prices before buying gasoline and consider paying with cash at stations that charge customers more for using credit cards.

Drivers can also enroll in fuel-savings programs, combine errands, reduce unnecessary trips, and properly maintain their vehicles.

AAA also advises drivers to slow down and avoid aggressive acceleration. Fuel economy decreases significantly at highway speeds above 50 mph, according to the organization.
