Macon-Bibb leaders support new Bibb Schools ESPLOST

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb business and county leaders want you to pass the new Bibb Schools ESPLOST Tuesday.

Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert and some local business owners announced their support at the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce Monday morning. Bibb Schools Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones explained what projects the ESPLOST would fund if it passes. The projects are listed below:

  • New facility for Northeast High and Appling Middle
  • Technology Improvements
  • Playground Equipment for Elementary Schools
  • Security Improvements
  • Gym Air Conditioning
  • High School Auditoriums
  • School Renovations
  • Transportation/Campus Police Facility
  • Athletic Improvements
  • Surplus Property Blight
  • Land/Property Acquisition
  • Charter School Projects

Dr. Jones said 21st Century Classrooms is the most important the new ESPLOST would fund.

“One of the things that’s disappointed me has been when students are able to go home or go to church and have better technology available than when they’re inside school. We’re teaching them for jobs that don’t exist. This gives us an opportunity to catch up and be up on the leading edge of that technology curve,” explained Dr. Jones.

If the ESPLOST is approved, the Bibb County Board of Education will appoint a Citizens ESPLOST Oversight Committee to assess and verify projects.
