Macon-Bibb district attorney’s office disposes of 63 cases since January

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — District Attorney Anita Howard announced Thursday her office resolved 63 cases since January 15.

Howard says she asked her leadership team to pull a list of people incarcerated at the Bibb County LEC on January 15. At that time, 794 people were list — some dating back to 2017.

D.A. Howard says the pandemic “caused the wheels of justice to stop.” She says her office is working to make sure cases move at the best possible rate.

“We look at each individual case, the set of circumstances of the case, what’s going on with the defendant, as well as contacting the victims and we are doing the work,” said Howard.

Resolved cases

  • 40 plead guilty or currently serving a sentence
  • 14 received a bond
  • 3 referred to a mental health facility
  • 2 dismissed
  • Others transferred or moved to accountability courts or other matters

Most of the resolved cases are non-violent offenders. The D.A.’s office still has about a third of the 794 cases left to go through. D.A. Howard says more cases could be resolved soon.
