MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Bibb County Fire Department celebrated a new class of firefighters Thursday as 26 recruits graduated during a ceremony held at Rock Springs Church on Bass Road.

Fire Chief Shane Edwards said the recruits earned the privilege of wearing the uniform through months of hard work, discipline and dedication. The group completed a rigorous fire recruit training program over the past three and a half to four months, facing daily challenges as they prepared for the job.

“We are just very fortunate today to be able to introduce 26 of our newest firefighters to the department,” Edwards said. “They’re graduating from completing a very rigorous program over the last three and a half, four months. They’ve been going through fire recruit school and overcoming many challenges every day.”

The ceremony included the presentation of colors, the national anthem and an invocation. The traditional pinning ceremony also honored all 26 graduates as they officially joined the department.

This year, the department added a new element to the ceremony to recognize one recruit who stood out among the class.

Edwards said the fire department is continuing to hire and is looking for new recruits for the next class of firefighters. Anyone interested in applying can do so through Macon-Bibb County Human Resources.
