Get ready for some Macon Bacon baseball

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Middle Georgia’s new baseball team revealed its name Wednesday: Macon Bacon.

“Hello I’m Mayor Robert Reichert,” Reichert told the packed theater at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. “And I’m delighted and excited to be the mayor when baseball comes back to Macon!”

With that, the celebration was on.

“Of all the different cities I’ve been in, I have never had the mayor of the city leading the cheer,” Macon Bacon co-owner Steve DeLay said. “So I want to give the mayor a standing ovation for that one.”

Baseball fans flocked to the GSHF Wednesday to learn the name of the city’s newest team.

“I’ve been out to some of the Macon Braves games,” Juan Jiminez of Bonaire says. “I was kind of sad to see when they left.”

“I think it’s a great thing,” says John ‘Blue Moon’ Odom, a three-time World Series champion with the Oakland A’s who grew up in Macon.  “Macon needed a baseball team and I’m quite sure they’re going to support it.”

It’ll be hard not to with a name like this.

“It was a good pick–Macon Bacon,” Jimenez said.

The team asked the public for help naming the team and chose from five finalists: Macon Noise, Macon Soul, Macon Bacon, Macon Hits and Macon Heat.

The Bacon is the newest member of the Coastal Plain League, a summer college league that’s been around 20 years.

“They are high level college players,” league commissioner Justin Sellers said. “We’ve had about 1,450 guys get drafted in our 20 years.”

Bacon fans will enjoy $2.5 million worth of renovations at Luther Williams Field when the team starts play next summer.

“You are going to be so excited to see the new Luther Williams Stadium,” Reichert told Wednesday’s audience. “Woo!”

“If you’re a five game or a ten game plan holder or a season ticket holder or one of our VIP people, your ticket price includes all your food and drinks,” DeLay said. “All the hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, water, soda, dessert.”

With a name like Bacon, the opportunities seem endless.

“Macon Bacon–that’s a good name,” Odom says. “I have one of the shirts. I’m going to wear that shirt Friday.”

“It’s different,” Jimenez says. “I think it will generate a lot of laughter.”

The Macon Bacon’s first game is June 1, 2018 at Luther Williams Field against their in-state rival Savannah Bananas.
