Local teen to put on ‘off broadway’ production in Fort Valley

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With fine arts programs in schools slowly but surely disappearing, a local teen has made it her mission to show kids the importance of the arts.

A group of kids in Fort Valley will take the stage Thursday night in their rendition of the Best Little Theater in Town. It’s a youth play but the plot here is pretty thick.

“During the plot, they find out that (the play) is unable to be funded because one of the accountants has actually stolen money,” said Victoria Day.

It’s a play about a play with 17 year-old Day as the director.

“Music is in important to me because it can help kids in a way that they don’t know,” she said.

Through the 4H youth mentoring organization, Day put together a full scale production with an entire cast under the age of 17.

“Victoria’s gift happens to be performing arts,” said parent and 4H volunteer Kellie Day. “I’m so proud of all of them working hard the last two months from building sets to securing the Austin Theater which is huge that they’re allowing her to have it here,” she continued.

Day may be director but showing kids the importance of performing arts has the starring role in this production.

“The entire educational part of it, coming together, helping one another learn their lines, helping one another to grow,” said parent Janice Childree.

“Much of our history is in painting and music, so I think that when we take that out of our children’s education they lose a little bit of where they came from,” Day’s mother added.

Just a day away from curtain call, lights, costumes, and characters are all in place.

“I wonder what Ms. Goodman will do? Will she have to close the best little theater in town?” one of the narrators of the play asked audience members.

But you’ll just have to wait until opening night to find out. The show is tomorrow night at the Austin Theater in Fort Valley. If you’re interested in coming out, tickets are $5 or free with any 5 canned food items.

They’ll hold a silent auction at 6:00 before the show starts at 6:30.

All of the proceeds from will go to an underfunded performing arts projects and programs. The canned goods will be donated to Gray’s House.
