Local organizations “Clothing the G.A.P.”
People shopped for a variety of clothing, shoes and coats at the Rosa Jackson Community Center, located at 1211 Maynard Street.
The organizations collect clothes and footwear throughout the year. Every year on the second Saturday in December, they host the “Clothing the Generations, Ages and People” holiday drive.
Gregory Brown is a member of the Gamma Pi Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. He’s an organizer of the event.
“We wanted to be able to give back to the community each year through kind donations from the community such as shoes, clothes, and coats,” says Brown. “It’s a joy because Christmas is a season of love, giving and charity.”
Cynthia Reese, a member of the Omega Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, says they recognize the hardships people are dealing with this Christmas season.
“Times are hard for people and they are in need of some additional items for themselves and their families,” says Reese.
Phi Beta Sigma fraternity collects shoes during its “Something Our Feet Treasure” project. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority collects coats during the “AKA Ruby Dunn Jacket Bank,” and the Masonic Lodge has a clothing bank.
