Little Richard Receives Honorary Degree at Mercer University in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There was ‘Slippin’ and Slidin'” and a little “Tutti Frutti” at Mercer University’s commencement, as rock ‘n’ roll legend Little Richard received an honorary degree.
The Macon native shared the stage with 500 hundred Mercer graduates where he received an honorary Doctorate Degree of Humanities. The musical pioneer rolled across the stage in a wheelchair decked out in a blue suit and matching sparkly blue cowboy boots. The college played a brief video of some of Little Richard’s hits before he received his degree.
Born Richard Wayne Penniman, the rock singer has influenced artists of all genres including Elvis Presley and Bruno Mars. In addition to “Slippin’ and Slidin'” and “Tutti Frutti”, Little Richard is famous for music like “Long Tall Sally” and “Rip It Up”.
His childhood home in the Pleasant Hill community is set to be moved to make way for a highway interchange construction. The Georgia Department of Transportation has purchased the home for preservation and it will serve as a Community Resource Center.
