Jones Co. deputies search for missing man

HADDOCK, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Jones County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for a man missing since last week.

Joe Frank Ussery Jr. has dementia and likes to walk where ever he goes.

“It’s a very heartfelt gesture for people I know and people I don’t know,” said Ussery Jr.

Joe Frank Ussery Junior can’t thank them enough.

“It means very much a lot to me,” said Ussery Jr.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office searched for Ussery Jr’s father, 77-year-old Joe Frank Ussery Senior Wednesday.

“Mr. Ussery was thought of well enough for people who knew him to come out here and look for him,” said Maj. Earl Humphries at the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

And even those who didn’t know him–like the Jones County Sheriff’s Office deputies–nearly half of whom were off duty.

“We’ve got a better than fair shot of finding him,” said Humphries.

One reason for that–technology and equipment that the Sheriff’s office has just for these types of situations.

“Those four-wheelers that sit back there they’re looking for Mr. Joe today along with a couple of the Hum-Vees riding around on the dirt roads,” said Gray Mayor Stephen Tingen. “We’ve got that drone looking around the property where we can’t go in the thick woods.”

Tingen helped officers with the search.

“It’s just those things that you see and you second guess, well why do they have that?” said Tingen. “And this is an instance where those resources are being used in a good way.”

All the effort aiming to find Ussery Senior with everything they can.

“First thing I’m going to do is hug him, love on him everything that I can,” said Ussery Jr.

“That’s the reward, you come out here and you work and you do your job at the end of the day when you help someone–that’s the reward of the job,” said Tingen. “Because I can assure you the paychecks aren’t the reward in law enforcement.”
