Japanese Exchange Students Visit Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mayor Robert Reichert  got a special visit from a group of students Wednesday afternoon.

And not just any group, as these kids hailed from the other side of the world: Japan.

16 students from Kurobe, Japan are visiting from their homeland in order to participate in school activities with their American counterparts at Rutland High School.

The exchange students and their chaperones are living with host families for the week, and aside from attending school, they’ll get to visit sites all across Middle Georgia and Atlanta.

“Some lessons can’t be taught out of a book,” said Rutland High teacher Rebecca Morgan, who is also the head of the exchange program for the school. “Some things have to be learned and experienced, so they get a one-on-one culture of learning with the children, and really shows how special the city is.”

Students from Rutland, which has been apart of the program since 2008, will be visiting Japan next fall.

The exchange students currently in Macon will return to their home country on Sunday.
