Trump Says Iran Peace Deal Possible As Tensions Rise Despite Ceasefire

(NBC)- New images released Thursday highlight the aftermath of an Iranian strike on an international airport in Kuwait that killed one person, underscoring the fragile state of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The developments come after the U.S. military said it shot down Iranian drones near the Strait of Hormuz and carried out a strike on a military installation located on an island in the region.

Despite the renewed tensions, President Donald Trump expressed optimism that a broader agreement could be reached soon.

“If it happens, it might not happen, but if it happens, it could happen, like over the weekend,” Trump said.

Iran’s top diplomat said negotiations have not produced any progress, but communication between Tehran and Washington remains open. The comments came after Iranian state media reported that Iran would suspend talks following increased Israeli attacks against Iran-backed militants in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Lebanon and Israel have agreed to a new ceasefire, according to a joint statement released with the U.S. State Department following negotiations in Washington.

On Capitol Hill, the House approved a resolution directing President Trump to halt military action unless Congress authorizes it. Four Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure, which is largely symbolic but represents a rare bipartisan rebuke.

“Congress alone declares war as something that we have to be certainly protective of,” said Rep. Tom Barrett, a Republican from Michigan.

Elsewhere in Washington, President Trump highlighted several projects tied to the upcoming America 250 celebrations. Plans include renovations to the Reflecting Pool near the Lincoln Memorial, a temporary UFC arena on the White House South Lawn for an event on June 14, and a proposed arch that is expected to be discussed by a planning commission amid concerns it could obstruct views of Arlington National Cemetery.
