Two dead, three officers injured in Minneapolis mass shooting

Two people were killed and several others were injured, including three police officers, after a mass shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday.

(CNN)- Two people were killed and several others were injured, including three police officers, after a mass shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building Wednesday.

Minneapolis police said officers were dispatched to a shooting at 15 East Grant Street.

When officers entered the building, they found victims and heard additional gunfire coming from an upper floor.

Police followed the sound and encountered a haze that limited their visibility, according to Sgt. Garrett Parten with the Minneapolis Police Department. Authorities said officers then came under heavy gunfire and exchanged shots with the shooter.

Officers also worked to move victims to safety during the shooting.

Three Minneapolis police officers were injured, including two who were shot. Authorities said all three officers are expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said one person died at the scene and another died at a hospital. Several other civilians were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The shooter was also confirmed dead.

Interim Minneapolis Police Chief Bill Peterson condemned the violence while praising the officers who responded.

“I’m truly sickened by this level of violence,” Peterson said. “That feeling is tempered only by the courageous actions of the Minneapolis police officers who responded.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also credited officers with preventing additional deaths.

“But for their heroic work, the death toll would have been far higher,” Frey said.
