Hayes adds Philp to 2014 recruiting class

MACON, Ga. (MERCER ATHLETICS RELEASE) – Mercer men’s tennis head coach Eric Hayes announced the completion of his 2014 recruiting class with the addition of Sam Philp on Friday afternoon.

“Adding Sam completes our squad and finalizes a solid recruiting class,” Hayes said. “Sam and our earlier commit Ruben VanOppen will give our team strong depth and stiff competition for every spot to play. The nationally competitive programs have depth and I feel like we have that now. Sam is also a very strong student and will be able to handle the balance of athletics and academics here at Mercer.”

Philp hails from Burlington, Ontario and sports a career-best International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking on No. 926 in the world. Rising as high as the No. 8 singles player in all of Canada, Philp also showed he is a solid doubles player as well when he and his partner captured the ITF Junior Group Two Doubles Championship in October of 2013.

The Mercer men’s tennis team went 9-17 last season and qualified for the Atlantic Sun Championship for the first time since 2011 in Hayes first season in Macon. The squad is set up for another strong campaign in 2014-15 as all six of its starting singles players will be back in the fold next season.
