Going Green: Save at the Habitat For Humanity ReStore

If you’re remodeling or in the market for decorating supplies you might want to check out the Macon Area Habitat For Humanity ReStore.

The store features items that are gently used and in some cases new. Everything the store sells is close to 50% off retail, because all of the items are donated by local businesses and people.

“All the proceeds from the store that we get here are added to our mission…[it] allows us to build more houses for low income working families,” said Executive Director Harold Tessendorf.

All the donated items also means less garbage filling the landfill. “Anything that’s donated here means somebody’s not throwing it away,” said ReStore Manager Charlie Hebenstreit.

Plus, the discounted products help consumers,”We’re allowing them in these times to be able to stretch their dollars that much further,” said Tessendorf; taking the items off businesses’ hands is another benefit.”We’re saving them the cost of having to dispose of this in the landfill, and in that way we are also supporting the local landfill, and our local community, because the landfill is one of the issues that we are looking at as a community,” said Tessendorf.

The warehouse holds big bargains shoppers, like Morgan Bouchillon, can’t get enough of, “We are re-doing my laundry room and so we are looking to save some money and to reuse some supplies so that we don’t have to buy new stuff,” said Bouchillon.

Customer Charles Burton is known around the ReStore as a regular, and he calls the warehouse one of his favorite stores for obvious reasons, “Because of the prices and the variety of the things that are here,” said Burton.

The ReStore is adding to the bigger picture for Habitat For Humanity, “I really see our store as the natural progression of our mission of allowing families and individuals to continue living in a safe sanitary shelter,” said Tessendorf.

The store is located at 690 Holt Ave. It’s open Wednesday-Friday 10 am-4 pm, and Saturdays from 9 am- 2 pm. Donations are accepted during business hours and are tax deductible.
