GHSA Basketball Championships returning to Macon in 2019

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Coliseum will host all four days of the 2019 Georgia High School Association Basketball Championships.

Spectra Venue Management, operators of the Macon Coliseum and Macon City Auditorium, made the announcement Wednesday.

Four of the championships returned to Macon in March 2018 after a one-year absence. The rest of the 2018 finals were held at Georgia and Georgia Tech.

The GHSA held all of its basketball finals at Georgia and Georgia Tech in 2017 after several issues in Macon in 2016, including baskets being set up in the wrong places.

The Coliseum got a new basketball floor, new basketball standards and new lights under Spectra’s management after complaints during the 2016 finals.

“We are pleased with the new management and the upgrades at the venue,” GHSA Executive Director Dr. Robin Hines said. “The events held at the Centreplex in 2018 were very successful and we look forward to the 2019 events.”

The Macon-Bibb County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) paid for the upgrades.

“The state basketball championship has been a part of Macon-Bibb for decades,” Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert said. “And thanks to the management of Spectra and the people of our community that approved the SPLOST, we were able to bring the games back.”

Spectra general manager David Aiello calls it a “great day” for Macon-Bibb County and the rest of middle Georgia.

“We look forward to welcoming the GHSA staff, athletes and fans to the Macon Coliseum in March for four days of incredible basketball. I’d like to specifically thank Mayor Robert Reichert and the Macon-Bibb Commissioners for providing us with the resources to make improvements to the facility.”
