Georgia soccer beats Auburn 3-0 in exhibition

ATHENS, Ga. (UGA SPORTS RELEASE) – The Georgia soccer team scored three second-half goals in just over a minute on its way to a 3-0 victory over league rival Auburn on Saturday night at the UGA Soccer Stadium in the Bulldogs’ final exhibition test heading into the 2014 season. The win came in front of an impressive standing-room-only crowd on a balmy night in Athens.

Georgia was coming off a 3-0 loss to Clemson last weekend, rebounding to put three in the back of the net to come away with the split of the exhibition schedule.

“I think the result we got tonight had a lot to do with our other preseason match against Clemson,” said fifth-year head coach Steve Holeman. “We had a lot to work on after that game. I think we’re better than we were six days ago, and with that said, we still have a lot to work on. We’ll make some progress this week and learn from this win tonight. The good thing [about scoring three goals in succession] is that a lot of teams have a tendency to score and then let down, and we did the opposite. Instead of hitting the breaks, we step on the gas and got the second and third one, and that was great for the girls. Hopefully we can continue that.”

The teams played to a scoreless first half, with Georgia outshooting Auburn by a count of 7-3 over the first 45:00. The Bulldogs got their first goal of the day in the 58th minute as sophomore defender Alexa Antetomaso sent one from long range over the keeper’s head following a UGA corner kick opportunity to give the home side the 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs followed that up just 19 seconds later as freshman Becca Rasmussen found Rachel Garcia in front, and the sophomore one-timed it into the back of the net for the 2-0 advantage. The third and final goal came 58 seconds after that, as forward Caroline Waters worked to keep a ball in just short of the end line, crossing it to freshman Kelsey Killean, and the rookie finished to put Georgia on top 3-0, which is where it remained.

Georgia ended leading in the shot column, 12-6, with freshman keeper Louise Hogrell recording the shutout with two saves. The Bulldogs ended leading 9-3 in corner kicks as well.

The Bulldogs are next in action next Friday night on the road in Oxford, Miss., where they will open the regular season against Ole Miss at 7 p.m. ET in the first in-season live event to be televised on the brand new SEC network. Live scoring and possible live audio coverage will be available on at kickoff, in addition to the return of the Georgia Soccer Live Blog.
