GC women’s tennis starts NCAA Regional Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS (GC ATHLETICS RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s tennis team (18-7) picked up the No. 6-seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, and will face No. 3-seed Flagler College (16-4) in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Region Tournament #2 Sunday, May 4 at noon.

The eight Southeast Region teams were split into two tournament locations, Regional #2 in Columbus, Ga. with host Columbus State University, and Regional #1 in Savannah, Ga. with host Armstrong Atlantic State University.

The Bobcats face the Saints in the first round, with the victor taking on the winner of the No. 2-seed CSU and No. 7-seed Erskine College.

In the other bracket, No. 1-seed Armstrong faces No. 8-seed Tusculum College, with No. 4-seed Francis Marion University battling No. 5-seed Wingate University.
The Bobcats will look for a measure of revenge against Flagler, having lost to the Saints this season 6-3 at home March 2.

Georgia College is led by its youth, as freshman Macy Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) has held down the first singles slot all season. The All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) selection is 15-7 on the year. The team’s top singles mark is owned by her sister Cristalei Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) at 18-5, mostly at the fourth slot.

Head coach Steve Barsby reshuffled the doubles lineup part-way through the season, with now the first doubles team featuring freshman Camille Clausse-Pujo (Bourdeaux, France) paired with senior Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) for a 5-5 mark. Katie Krupp (Evans, Ga.) and Cristalei Polk are 9-1 in the third slot.

This marks the 20th straight season for Bobcat women’s tennis in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Last year, the Bobcats beat Augusta State University in the opening round, losing to Armstrong in the final.
