2026 MIDTERM ELECTIONS: Gas prices remain high as voters head to polls
Rising fuel costs drive election concerns as Georgia residents benefit from extended tax relief

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Georgia drivers are paying an average of about $3.57 per gallon for regular gasoline on Election Day, while a temporary suspension of the state’s fuel tax remains in effect through November 30.
Gas prices top voter concerns on Election Day
On Election Day, gas prices remain a top issue for voters across the United States, with the national average for regular gasoline at $4.14 per gallon and diesel at $6.28, according to AAA. Many voters say rising fuel costs, along with ongoing conflict in Iran, are weighing heavily on their minds as they head to the polls.
Former President Donald Trump has promised at campaign rallies that gas prices will fall soon, but so far, there is no long-term evidence to support those claims. Despite his assurances, nearly three-quarters of registered voters disapprove of his handling of inflation and the cost of living, according to recent polls. Political analysts note, however, that Trump has overcome similar objections from voters in the past, and his approval ratings may not necessarily impact other Republican candidates down the ballot.
Georgia extends fuel tax suspension through Thanksgiving
In Georgia, on October 24, Governor Brian Kemp has extended the state of emergency and the suspension of motor fuel excise taxes through November 30. The move, originally set to expire on November 5, removes 33.3 cents per gallon in state taxes on gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon on diesel. The suspension comes just as many Georgians prepare to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The emergency orders also suspend certain state weight limits on commercial vehicles and penalties for using off-road “dyed” diesel in on-road vehicles. Kemp’s office cited AAA data showing Georgia’s average price at $3.66 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.72 per gallon for diesel—about 63 cents and 61 cents below the respective national averages.
