FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Fort Valley State University (FVSU) says head football coach Shawn Gibbs will remain as the leader of the Wildcats’ program.
In an announcement Tuesday night, FVSU Director of Athletics Renae Myles Payne said Gibbs has “officially renewed his agreement with FVSU.”
“Our discussions regarding the extension began following our historic victory in the Florida Beach Bowl,” Payne said. “Despite enticing offers from other institutions seeking his expertise, Coach Gibbs has chosen to stay with us, reaffirming his commitment to our Wildcats.”
Myles Payne added Gibbs “embodies a straightforward coaching style that resonates perfectly with our program” and that he “has proven time and time again that he is the ideal fit for our institution.”
FVSU did not disclose details of the renewal.
Gibbs took over the program in 2022, leading the Wildcats to an 8-2 record in 2022 and an 8-3 record in 2023, culminating with a 23-10 win over Johnson C. Smith University in the Florida Beach Bowl.
Prior to his arrival, the Wildcats hadn’t reached the 8-win mark since 2012.
