Former Falcons coach: Mercer football ‘great’ for Georgia recruits

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The man who’s played and coached in more Super Bowls than anyone else was in Macon Thursday.

Dan Reeves, former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants and Denver Broncos, was the guest speaker at a fundraiser at the Methodist Home of Macon.

We asked the two-time Super Bowl champion his thoughts on Mercer football, which restarted in 2012 after a 71-year break.

“There are so many great players in the state of Georgia that with Georgia and Georgia Tech or Georgia Southern–the schools that are established–now there are a lot of kids out there who don’t get an opportunity to play college football,” Reeves said. “They come out of high school and there aren’t enough scholarships out there, so it’s great that Mercer has a program and it’s great that they have started out playing so strong.”

Reeves, who was born in Rome and grew up in Americus before playing college football at the University of South Carolina, was speaking at the home’s Evening of Hope” event, which raises money to care for abused and neglected children.
