First Lady of Georgia reads to Macon students
Macon, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – First Lady of Georgia, Sandra Deal, stopped in Macon Thursday morning as part of her Read Across Georgia Tour.
Students of all ages at Rosa Taylor Elementary listened as Deal read books and spoke on the importance of staying in school and making good grades.
The former teacher says increasing the literacy rate in Georgia starts with helping children find a passion for reading and learning at an early age.
“You feel so empowered when you learn to read and when you learn your math skills. You feel good about yourself, and that’s what I want these children to get from all this,” says Deal.
Deal bleieves students have to put forth effort and take learning outside of the classroom.
“The teachers can’t pour it into their heads as much as they would like to,” Deal adds,”They just have to do it for themselves.”
March is considered National Reading Awareness Month.
