Fiery crash sends tractor trailer driver to hospital

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A tractor trailer driver is in stable condition after a fiery crash late Saturday at the intersection of Pio Nono Avenue and Houston Avenue.

A release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office says 57-year-old Mark Godfrey of Rincon was traveling north on Highway 247 around 11 p.m. when he lost control of the tanker at the intersection.  The tanker flipped and landed on its side before exploding into flames.  The flames damaged a vacant building nearby.  The Macon-Bibb Fire Department helped put out the fire.

Godfrey was taken to Medical Center, Navicent Health and treated for injuries he received in the accident.  The intersection at Pio Nono and Houston was closed for several hours to clean the area and reopened about 5:30 a.m.

Godfrey told deputies he was traveling too fast but was not cited.  The accident is under investigation.
