Fatal accident on Hwy 96 in Taylor County, lanes blocked

BUTLER, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Thursday Morning, September 16, 2021, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office posted an announcement on social media notifying the public that a fatal accident had left all lanes blocked on eastbound Highway 96.

Taylor County Coroner Gary C. Lowe told 41NBC that the accident had happened around 5 a.m. He said that the 18-wheeler truck involved had run off of the road, hit the guard rail, and flipped over. According to the statement from the Taylor County Sheriff’s office, the accident took place in the river bottom near the flint river. All lanes were blocked on Highway 96 Eastbound, but according to Sheriff Jeff Watson, one lane has been opened on the Westbound part of Hwy 96 to keep the flow of traffic going. Watson says the wreck should be cleared by 10 or 11 a.m.

Coroner Lowe says the victim was a male born in 1995, Sheriff Watson tells 41NBC that more information will be released when the victim’s family has had more time since they had just been told what happened. According to Watson the single vehicle wreck resulted in the victim being pronounced deceased on the scene at around 6 a.m.
