Family tells 41NBC what type of person Jacquel Smith was

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The father and grandmother of the 20-year-old college student, Jacquel Smith, described the type of person he was.

Smith’s father, Tommy Evans, said he son was respectful and caring.

“He was more than I expected him to be in the short time he had here,” he said.

Evans said his son was very kind and he always knew how to put a smile on his dad’s face.

“He always kid me how short I was cause he was taller than me. He always called me to tell me just that he loved me, text me, he always kept in touch,” he said.

Smith was shot and killed by his friend on Sunday. His dad said his family is trying to get through the pain.

Smith comes from a Christian family where his Grandma Betty said prayer helps her family gets through hard times.

“We will be praying for each and everyone one of us. We’ll be praying for each other and hoping that nobody else will have to go through this,” White said.

She said her grandson was loving and he had a good head on his shoulders.

Smith went to East Georgia College Statesboro.

“It’s sad that he had to leave the world like this, before he could get a chance to make something out of himself like he wanted to,” White said.

Evans said he is overwhelmed by how much people have reached out to him about his son.

“It just makes me feel good as his dad to know that my son loved like that and he had so many people that appreciated him and he made an impact on his life, ” he said.

And Evans said he is going to work on forgiving the man who took his son’s life and he wants Smith’s friends to do the same.

“He was wrong and I got to find it in my heart to forgive him. I can’t forgive him right now. I got to pray about it,” he said. “But don’t nobody go out there and do nothing stupid, no retaliation cause too many young people dying already.”

A young man’s life taken by a friend leaving many heartbroken.

Smith’s family is having vigil Friday night in Dublin at 130 Park Place.
