GSP: Pickup hits deer, crosses center line in fatal Dooly crash

GSP says a pickup crossed the center line after hitting a deer and struck Jayland Richardson’s car head-on.

DOOLY COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A 21-year-old Hampton man died Tuesday morning in a head-on crash after another driver struck a deer and crossed the center line on Georgia Highway 27, according to Georgia State Patrol.

Troopers were called around 6:30 a.m. to the crash near Old Americus Road.

A preliminary investigation found 47-year-old Rogelio Herrera-Ortiz of Richmond, Virginia, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado east when a deer entered the roadway.

GSP says Herrera-Ortiz struck the deer while swerving left. The pickup crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2024 Hyundai Elantra head-on.

The Hyundai’s driver, identified as 21-year-old Jayland Richardson of Hampton, died.

Herrera-Ortiz was taken to Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, where GSP says he was listed in serious condition.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
