Deadline approaching to sign up for health insurance coverage

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Time is running out for those wanting to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Georgia State Director of Enroll America Dante McKay says the deadline is February 15. He along with other state and national healthcare officials are touring the state to remind everyone about signing up before the deadline.

The “Countdown to Get Covered” bus stopped in Macon at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist church for a rally.

“We’re doing very well,” says McKay.“We are the fourth in the country with 449,000 Georgians having signed up for it so far.”

McKay says their mission is to get as many Americans enrolled with healthcare coverage and help them keep it.

“We’re going through the community recognizing community resources and partners that have been on the front lines helping consumers,” he explained.

Insure Georgia is one of those partners. It is helping consumers sign up for health care through a call center.

“We inform them of the benefits of getting health insurance through the ACA and ah, what benefits are covered,” said the Director of Navigation, Melissa Camp. ”There’s central health benefits where they can get their basic care.”

According to Camp, they also help people budget the cost of their healthcare plan.

“We look at their over all financial picture to see if they do qualify for some tax credits to help them lower the cost of the premium,” added Camp.

McKay warns that there is a penalty for not meeting the Feb. 15 deadline.

“Those that go without coverage will be subject to a fine that fine is $325 or 2% of your income,” he said.
