Construction underway for the Lofts at Mercer complex

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Mercer University broke ground Wednesday on its most recent construction project.

Mercer President Bill Underwood joined students and county officials for the groundbreaking of the Lofts at Mercer Complex.

The new complex will include student housing, office space, and a parking deck. It will be located on Canton Street, across from Mercer University Drive and the school’s stadium.

Construction crews are already on track to meet the scheduled opening date in 2016. Underwood says the new project will become the gateway into Macon.

“This will be another transformational step in the ongoing renaissance of Macon and it certainly allows Mercer to continue its growth and expansion,” says Underwood.

Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert says the county is partially funding a pedestrian bridge over Mercer University Drive. Reichert says it is part of the Second Street Corridor Revitalization Project.

“This bridge is going to transform the south side of Macon,” says Macon Mayor Robert Reichert. “Macon-Bibb County is coming together like it has never come together before.”

More construction is scheduled for the Mercer University area. A new hotel and restaurants are scheduled to be built adjacent to the Lofts at Mercer.
