Coach “Spoon” starts new journey at Macon County High School

MONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Sheddrick Risper is known simply as Coach Spoon here in Middle Georgia, and with a resume like his, one name is all you need.
Risper was raised in Thomaston, Georgia before moving to Macon in 1998, where he became the wide receivers coach at Westside High School. Risper took over as the head coach of the Seminoles in 2009, and ultimately became the winningest coach in the history of Bibb County, but after 28 years, and 119 wins in Macon, Risper is now embarking on a new journey, in Macon County.
“I’m just happy to be here, and I’m loving every minute of it,’ Risper said.
The players seem to feel the same way.
“It’s been great, honestly,” senior linebacker Kenzarien Reeves said. “I’m happy to have Coach Spoon as our new head coach, and I’m grateful for the staff he brought around for us. Everyday we’ve just been getting better and better and better.”
With a proven leader commanding the huddle, a new and improved culture is on its way to Montezuma.
“That’s all we needed,” Reeves added. “We needed discipline. When he first got down here I was the person to say we needed discipline, and that’s one thing we get criticized for.”
“They found out really fast that I mean business,” Risper said. “Kids might say they don’t want adults to tell them what they do, but in actuality they do.”
With a new voice, and a rich history of winning football in Macon County, a special season could be on the horizon for the Bulldogs.
“The message for him is standards over feelings,” senior running back Noah Parker said. “I think we’re gonna be a good program this year.”
“Their cousins, their brothers, their uncles, their fathers, they all played here so they know the tradition and they know the brand,” Risper noted. “We’re trying to get that brand back to become a state championship caliber team again. We’re just trying to get the standard back to where it used to be.”
The Bulldogs open the regular season at home against Dooly County on Aug. 21.
